“Cosmic Christmas”

A Yuletide Odyssey At the Glendale Planetarium

LOS ANGELES, CA – This holiday season take a trip to the far reaches of the galaxy for a truly unique multi-media spectacular.

The Glendale Planetarium presents Eban Schletter’s Cosmic Christmas: A yuletide odyssey played out in the high tech full dome theater, featuring live Theremin performance, state-of-the-art SkySkan star fields and real-time animation performed by Academy Award winner J-Walt, creator of the critically acclaimed Spontaneous Fantasia.

Cosmic Christmas began as an offbeat, yet melodious, concept album by composer/songwriter Eban Schletter, who is best known for his film and TV work (SpongeBob SquarePants, Mr. Show with Bob & David, and much more).  Released in November of 2009, this bizarre Theremin infused album depicted the awakening of artificial intelligence aboard a military satellite which, lost in space, drifted into a waft of Christmas Spirit.  Hailed as “one of the most unique Christmas albums in years” (Synthtopia Magazine) and “a holiday space opera for the ages” (Jambands.com), the record made its way to the New York Times and Los Angeles Times holiday music recommendations as well as the Metromix “Top 10 weirdest Christmas records of all time” list. For audiences who were fortunate enough to attend the test run of the show at the Glendale Planetarium last year, Cosmic Christmas was a dazzling sensory adventure and an entertaining exploration of the meaning of Christmas in light of the direction the world seems to be heading. To create this ambitious program, Schletter collaborated with a team of experts in cutting edge technology:  – Paul Buehler, the Planetarium’s resident expert, programmed a journey through and beyond the solar system and integrated video material provided by Schletter.  – Digital designer John Arballo brought the satellite to life.  – And J-Walt created original animations which he  performs live in real time via his own proprietary system.  Those familiar with J-Walt’s Spontaneous Fantasia shows, themselves a critically acclaimed virtual reality tour de force, were pleasantly surprised to see he him take a break from the vivid creation of entire worlds (as in his show “The Omnicentric Universe”) in order to send candy canes and presents dancing through a galaxy of ornaments and twinkling gleams.
